My little boy called to me, from the darkened room.
For a drink of water and words to lighten his gloom.
I said, "Son, no need to fear, I'm here to keep you safe,
and God is too, for He surrounds and fills this place."
A second time he called I said, "Son it is getting late
and remember God is here, never fear, no need to lie awake.
Daddy, he said, I know God is near, but it is you I want to stay
'cause I want to talk with someone with "skin on his face."
I thought of those words, childlike and yet so true
and I thanked God for giving me friends both old and new.
For though God is with us, surrounds our lives and place,
It is a blessing to have "someone with skin on their face."
